Will Trailer Brakes Lock Up when Connected to 2003 BMW X3 that Does Not have a Brake Controller

Hi. I just bought a trailer it has electric brakes. I have an BMW X5. It has the 7 way connector and so does the trailer. However i do not have a brake controller in the car. I have to go pick up the trailer but my question is without a break controller will the brakes lock up on the trailer? Or will they not work at all? I ask because i would rather not have them lock up on me . Please let me know. Thankyou.

The brakes on the trailer will not lock up. they actually won't do anything at all (unless something was miswired). To activate the brakes you would need to have a brake controller. Without one the brakes will not function.

Because of how the wiring works on a BMW the recommend brake controller for the 2003 X5 with factory 7-Way is actually the Prodigy RF # TK94FR which mounts to the trailer. If you do want the brakes to function in the future, which I do recommend as it will be much safer and produce less wear and tear on the vehicle, then the Prodigy RF is the controller for you.
