For your 2005 Ford Escape, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # 75751. This is a customized fit for your vehicle. It will allow proper clearance between vehicle parts including the muffler. Although contact most likely will never happen, I can't realistically guarantee it never will. I've attached some helps if this ever does become an issue.
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2", # C13315, is a fit for the Mazda CX-5 and is not compatible with your 2005 Ford Escape.
If you plan to do any towing with this hitch, I recommend using the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs, # 989900. This kit will give you two ball mounts and two hitch balls to assist you in towing different trailers level. I've attached a review video for you as well as an article on choosing the right ball mount for your application.
For your vehicle wiring, I recommend the 2005 Ford Escape T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 118426. This will simply plug into your factory wires behind your tail lights and then a power wire is run to your battery for the ModuLite that protects and reduces strain on your factory wiring. I've included an installation video for you.
