Question:

I was wondering what the benefit of the 3 inch offset of the ball. Is it to use the front rail to provide more support?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The Curt Above-Bed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Fifth Wheel Rails # 16055 has an offset of 3 inches in order for the coupler to be further from the cab of the truck which will allow more clearance for making turns. Its primarily for short bed trucks since there isn't as much room in the bed.

Even though it isn't necessary, it can be used on a long bed truck without issues.
