Rooftop Cargo Basket for 2013 Lexus RX 450h
Question:
I am interested in one of Thules roof baskets, either the Canyon or the Trail XT. I have a 2013 Lexus RX 450h with rails, but no crossbars. After reading some reviews, I am concerned about the curvature of the Lexus factory crossbars, and am wondering if a flat crossbar would be better for the securing a roof basket. Any insights? Also, can a canoe or other long cargo be strapped to the Canyon, as it appears can be done with the Trail XT?

I checked with Thule and they do not show direct cargo basket fits for factory bars on your 2013 Lexus RX 450h so an aftermarket square bar rack will be a good way to go to ensure a basket such as their Canyon # TH859XT will fit well on your car.
I suggest the Curt Roof Rack # C181118 that will mount to your raised roof side rails with a 32-inch bar spread; this bar spacing is compatible with both the Canyon and Trail baskets.
On thing to keep in mind is that your RX 450h has a finite roof weight capacity (check your owner's manual) that cannot be exceeded. This means that the combined weight of your roof rack (about 10-lbs), cargo basket (29-lbs for the Canyon XT) and your loaded cargo cannot exceed this limit.
Also, note that loading and unloading a basket can be much easier when you have a step, such as the lightweight aluminum folding step # TE97FR. This inexpensive item gives you a foot of additional reach when installing and working with your rooftop cargo accessories.
A canoe or kayak could be strapped to a cargo basket provided that its weight does not put the total load on the roof above its rated capacity. You would need to secure the craft both at the basket area and also at both the bow and stern ends with tie-down straps.
In terms of safety and stability you will be better off using an actual kayak carrier, either one that mounts to the bars like # TH834 (assuming there is enough space left after you mount the cargo basket) or one that uses foam blocks and installs directly on the roof like # RL100K10.
