Recommended Flat Towing Setup for a 2013 Smart Fortwo Passion Coupe
Question:
What equipment is needed to flat tow a 2013 Smart Fortwo Passion Coupe? It will be flat towed behind either a 2006 Ford F-350 SD, CC, 4x4 XLT lifted 6 inches with the Reese Titan 48 inch Hitch Box extension with the 2 inch opening or a 2007 Jeep Patriot limited 4x4 with a Curt 2 inch receiver hitch. To be able to flat tow your 2013 Smart Fortwo you will need a handful of equipment. The Roadmaster Base Plate Kit # 52285-1 will work really well on your Fortwo. It features removable arms so when you are not towing you will still have that nice, clean look.
The next thing we will need to look at is a tow bar, like the Sterling # RM-576 from Roadmaster, and wiring, like the Roadmaster # RM-15267. This will help your brake lights still work on your Fortwo while towing. Another thing you might want to look at is the 48 inch Long 4-Pole Loop with Cover # HM47115. This loop will allow you to still use the Reese Extension that you mentioned earlier, when flat towing. It is always advised to see if you need to use a high-low adapter as well; I am attaching a helpful article for you so tat you can determine if you will need one for you application.
Last, but not least, is the braking system. I recommend using the Roadmaster Even Brake # RM-9400, which not only works really well, but is also very versatile. Since this braking system applies pressure to the towed vehicle's brake pedal inside the cab, you can use it on almost any vehicle.
It is always a good idea to check your owner's manual for any specific instructions, like if your vehicle requires a disconnect switch # RM-766, regarding flat towing.
