Factory Brake Controller on 2015 Ford F-150 Keeps Saying Trailer is Disconnected
Question:
I purchased new auto adjusting brake assemblies and other parts to add brakes to our Boy Scout trailer. Im towing it with a 2015 F-150 and the truck keeps reporting that the trailer is becoming disconnected. We verified the wiring and even ran a dedicated ground from the brakes to the wiring junction box to make sure that was good. The brakes also dont feel as strong as they should be. Any thoughts on additional steps to troubleshoot this?

Since you have checked all the wiring and ground connections and verified that everything looks good, the next place to look at is the trailer connector. Often when the brake controller indicates no connection with the trailer, this is where the problem lies. Check to see if you can find any corrosion around the connector and around the pins. Look for any pins that may be bent that would prevent a good connection when attached to the trailer. If you notice a bent pin, you should be able to just manually straighten it back up.
If this does not help, just let me know and I would be happy to look into your setup further.
As for the trailer brakes themselves not feeling as strong as they should be, it's possible that simply fixing the damaged trailer connector (if it was damaged) can help to improve this issue, but most likely it is a separate matter altogether. If the brakes aren't working like you think they need to be, they may need an adjustment. Even self-adjusting brakes like the ones you have require an initial setup in order to provide the desired stopping power. Check to make sure they are properly adjusted, The brakes should have a little bit of drag, but you should still be able to turn the hub with your hand, and see if you are able to improve their performance this way.
