Question:
Hi, I would like to purchase a bike rack which can easily switch between 2 bike and 4 bike carrier. I usually transport only 2 bikes and would like the ability to detach the system and make it a 2 bike carrier when needed. Please let me know.

The best option that we have in the 4 bike to 2 bike category is the Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH69TX. The things that set this bike rack apart from the other 2 is the ratcheting hooks hold the bikes by their tires which means that the frame of the bike doesn't come in contact with the hooks, it can accommodate fat tire bikes, it can fold up, and it can tilt forward while bikes are still loaded for easy access to your cargo area. It has a hitch locks and bike locks included. They only drawback with this rack is the bumper clearance. It only has 7" of clearance when folded down and 5 inches when folded up. That is pretty tight.
If clearance is an issue you could also take a look at the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 which offers 12" when in use and 7 inches when folded, or the Saris Freedom # SA4414B which offers 13-1/2' in use and 10" when folded. However, this rack stays a 4-bike rack and can't convert to a 2-bike. I would recommending adding locks # SA984 if you go with the freedom. The T2Pro XTR and the HoldUp include locks.
I attached videos of these three racks for you to check out.
