Swagman states that when mounting bikes to the Trailhead 3 Bike Rack, # S63365, the bikes should be mounted in alternating directions.
This is done to ensure that handle bars and other bike components will not get in the way when mounting your bikes to the rack.
Also, make sure that you position one of the anti-sway cradle straps close to the seat tube for each bike. Doing this will ensure a secure mount for each bike at that point on your bikes' frame. The second strap should attach around the seat tube to finish that connection of the bike to the rack.
Also, if you are trying to mount alternative frame bikes like a step-thru frame, women's or a child's bike, then you will need an adapter bar. An adapter bar, like # UB01, will allow you to mount these bikes evenly on hanging bike racks by providing a horizontal mounting surface for these bike frames.
