How to Determine Capacity of Trailer Axle to Replace Springs

Question:

Hello, I recently purchased a used boat and trailer. I would like to see if I can find the axle load rating. The springs need replacing. After reading several of your experts advice to other people in need, I have the following information. The trailer is a 1979 vanson id# ca1017307 and control# 1096307. The wheel bearing numbers are inner #4t-88148 and outer #4t-l44849. I read the numbers as best as I could. The axle is 2x2 square. I hope you can help. Thank you

It sounds like your bearings are likely # L68149 for the inner and # L44649 for the outer. The numbers can get pretty hard to read sometimes. You should measure the inner diameter of both to confirm. The measurements you should come up with are 1.378 inches for # L68149 and 1.063 inches for # L44649.

If these are correct you likely have a 3,500 pound axle on your trailer.

To find the correct replacement springs you'll also want to measure the length of the existing spring and find one that is the same length and same number of leaves. Keep in mind the old springs will likely sag and elongate over time so yours will be slightly longer than they were when new.
