Trailer Mounted Electric Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2009 Nissan Murano

Question:

I have a 2009 Nissan Murano. The trailer I want to pull has electric brakes. Do I need to connect in some kind of brake controller into the system or does the little black box in the harness you supply provide that? If I have to add a controller, do you have any suggestions. Ive been looking at the ones that you mount on the trailer, thus avoiding having to put something under the dash.

The black box on the Trailer Wiring Harness, # 118653, for the 2009 Nissa Murano is actually a converter box that makes the signals that come from your vehicle compatible with the trailer. It does not provide electric brake functions. For this, you will need to install a brake controller.

To start, you will need to install the # 118653 harness. You will then need to install a 7-Way trailer connector, # 37185. The 4-Way you installed plugs into the back of this connector first, and the remaining wires would then be hardwired.

Since you want to use a trailer mounted brake controller like the Curt Echo # C51180, you will not have to attach the blue wire from the # 37185. Make sure to ground the white wire to the frame in a place that is clean and corrosion/paint free. Then, you will need to connect a length of wire # 10-1-1, long enough to reach from the end of the vehicle to the front, to the black wire on the connector. Route this wire under the vehicle, avoiding areas that may pinch and burn the wire, and up through the engine compartment.

Under the hood, attach a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, to the sheet metal in the engine bay. The wire you routed will first attach to the circuit breaker and then go from there to the positive battery terminal. The white wire on the # 37185 will attach to the vehicle frame. The blue wire will not be used. The last wire will attach to the reverse light wire behind one of the tail lights if the trailer has reverse lights. Otherwise it can be taped up and stowed out of the way.

With the new 7-Way mounted and wired, you will ready to use the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 which connects directly into the 7 way connection and allows you to control the unit from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone.
