Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 2012 Subaru Outback

Question:

Im considering buying a Scamp trailer to tow with my 2012 Outback Premium with a 6-speed manual transmission. The car came with 4-pin trailer wiring and I had a Hidden Hitch installed. My trailer will have brakes, of course. What other parts will I need, besides this brake controller?

You will need to add a 7-Way trailer connector and a brake controller to your 2012 Subaru Outback to utilize the electric trailer brakes on the Scamp.

To add a 7-Way using your existing 4-Way you will need installation kit # ETBC7. This contains the 7-Way and the accessories needed to hardwire in a brake controller. I included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. It will apply the trailer brakes proportionally to how much the vehicle is braking. Time delay controllers such as # 39523 send back the same amount of power, whatever you have it set to, regardless of the braking situation so it can lead to more wear and tear on the vehicle and trailer brakes and require a lot of fine tuning. If cost is an issue you can use proportional controller # TK63VR .
