Recommended Weight Distribution System For Trailer With 500-lb Tongue Weight
Question:
Im trying to figure out what weight distribution system I need to get for my 2014 Ford Explorer Sport. It has the towing package and from what I can find, it looks like it is rated for 2,000 lbs gtw and 200 lbs tongue weight OR 5,000 lbs gtw and 500 lbs tongue weight with a weight distribution system. I am buying a 2014 Yamaha AR192 boat which looks like it will be just over 3,000 lbs and close to 500 lbs tongue weight. Would the FA94-00-0600 be the item I need to safely tow this boat? Thanks,

The best way to determine what system will work for you is to know what your total tongue weight is. The total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully-loaded-ready-to-tow trailer added to the weight of any cargo you place behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. You will then want to find a system where your total tongue weight falls near the middle of the tongue weight range for the system. Getting a system that is too small will be useless, but getting a system that is too big will result in a stiff, uncomfortable experience.
If the total tongue weight for your trailer is 500-lbs, then the # FA94-00-0600 would work great for you. You may find that by the time you load up your vehicle and the trailer you exceed the 500-lb limit of the # FA94-00-0600 system. If your weight is between 400 and 800-lbs I recommend part # FA94-00-0800. This system is similar to the # FA94-00-0600 system but has a higher capacity.
