Recommended Equipment to Tow With a 1995 GMC 3500

Question:

I am considering purchasing a 1995 GMC 3500 dually with the 454 motor. What I want to do is use it to pull a travel camper trailer not 5th wheel. I am not sure what this truck could potentially handle weight and towing wise or if its a good idea to get for this at all. Im not looking for something huge but I do need it to haul a camper and all the gear without much issue. Looking for advice and recommendations as far as what it could be capable of or advice on a different truck to use. Thanks.

Oh I wouldn't be too concerned with your 1995 GMC 3500 Dually with a 454 motor having trouble pulling a camper trailer. A truck that is a 3500 model is made for heavy-duty applications.

The best way to find out the towing weight capacity of any vehicle is by looking into the owner's manual. If the owner's manual doesn't have that information sometimes you can find it on a sticker inside the door frame.

The only great concern that I would have is the age of the vehicle. Even if it is pristine condition, if something were to go out on it, it might be a little more difficult to fix up over a newer truck just due to finding the correct parts.

If you do decide to go with the 1995 GMC and it doesn't have the correct parts for towing, you will need a trailer hitch receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, and some trailer wiring.

For a hitch receiver I recommend the Draw-Tite # 37130. For a ball mount you will want to use the attached article to help you make sure that you get the correct Rise/Drop for your application. I have attached a link to our selection of ball mounts for you but a simple way to take all of the guesswork out of it is to go with an adjustable ball mount like part # LTB8-2.

Since you will most likely need to use a brake controller (always use one if your trailer has brakes) I recommend installing the Tekonsha T-One # 118315 along with the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This combination will allow you to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is what I recommend going with. I have attached a video of this setup being installed on a 1995 Chevy Pickup that you can use as a reference.
