How to Determine Wire Function for Replacing Trailer 5-Way with H20044 7-Way
Question:
My boat trailer has hydraulic surge brakes. The trailer has 6 wires white, green and brown bundled yellow and brown bundled and red. As I understand it, this is what the wires feed: white ground green right turn signal yellow left turn signal brown running lights left and right red ??? is my red wire for the surge brakes? I would like to add the 7 pin connector H20044 and junction box so I can do away with the adapter that I am currently plugging my 5 pin flat connector into. My vehicle is a 2008 Ford F150, 2 wheel drive with towing package. I am currently plugging my 5 pin flat connector into an 7-pin adapter that fits directly into my vehicle connection. Does the video for part # H20044 and junction box show the correct wiring for my trailer wiring? Where would the red wire go? Thanks a million

What you will need to do is verify the colors of the wire on your trailer. In some cases trailer manufacturers will use the standard wire colors to wire everything up, but there's no guarantee that's the case. Especially if someone else messed with the wiring at some point and didn't have all of the colors available.
Trace each of the wires to be sure. It sounds like your white is ground, your wires bundled with brown are running lights but the rest can go a few ways that we have seen. Follow each wire back to where it terminates and that will be how you know.
I attached a diagram that lists how the # H20044 is wired by color and you'll see a couple circuit colors don't match the typical standard.
