Can I tow a 2018 Sunset Trail Ultra Light camper with my 2006 Ford Explorer?
Question:
I have a 2006 Ford Explorer 4.6L V8 4x4 5 passenger truck. I wanted to know if it was possible to tow a 2018 Sunset trail ultra light camper. The truck has a class 3/4 2inch hitch, and I have purchased the Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake controller. The camper is 5212 pounds dry and the dealer said that includes ac propane and batteries. The hitch weight is 658lbs specs enclosed. So do you think it is possible to tow with this vehicle until I purchase a new truck in a year or so? And what equipment would you recommend in regards to weight distribution hitch and any other equipment would you recommend?. I was looking at the equalizer in regards to the distribution hitch system. I don't mind the price if it will make everything as safe as possible! Thanks again

Congratulations on your new camper! As long as you check a few key details, I believe you will be able to use your 2006 Ford Explorer to tow your Sunset Trail Ultra Light.
First, you will need to verify that your hitch is rated for use with weight distribution. If you have an after-market hitch, you can check the hitch for a weight rating label to make sure that a weight distributing (WD) capacity is listed. If no rating is listed, a weight distribution system cannot be used. If you have a factory-installed hitch this information should be provided in your owner's manual. You will need a WD towing capacity of at least 8000 pounds and a WD tongue weight capacity of 800 lbs.
Second, the size of your weight distribution system is determined primarily by the total tongue weight of your towing setup. The total tongue weight (TW) refers to the loaded tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of the cargo that sits behind the rear axle of your vehicle. You can measure your TW using the TW Scale, part # e99044.
The Equalizer weight distribution system I would recommend is part # EQ37100ET. This system is rated for 700 - 1000 lb TW and has the integrated 4-point sway control which limits side-to-side movement of your trailer. To minimize the noise and reduce wear and tear on your sway control brackets and spring bars, I would also recommend purchasing Equalizer's Sway Bracket Jackets, part # EQ95-01-5150. You can store your WD system in the Classic Accessories WD Tote, part # CA80113 when not in use.
I've provided some links to the parts I mentioned above as well as some helpful articles on WD and determining your trailer's TW. Travel safely and be sure to send us photos of your new set up.
