Reason for Difference in Torque Specifications for Curt and Draw-Tite Hitch on 2017 Subaru Forester

I am looking at the Draw Tite and Curt class III trailer hitches ans I see a 2X difference in the bolt torques. Can you tell me why there is such a big difference and which bolt material or coating system is better against corrosion? Thanks.

The difference in torque specifications between the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch # 75876 and the Curt Class III # C13144 referenced in your question is simply due to the different grade bolts that each of the hitches use. The Draw-Tite hitch uses GR5 fasteners while the Curt hitch includes GR8 units. Both of these hitches are confirmed to fit your 2017 Subaru Forester and will install roughly the same way, using the same mounting locations under the vehicle.

Both hitches also feature a black powder coat finish over a protective base coat to offer excellent rust resistance. They are both designed to withstand the elements and fight corrosion.

I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III # 75876 for your vehicle. This is because unlike Curt, Draw-Tite does not require the use of stabilizing straps like # 18050 for non-trailer loads such as bike racks and cargo carriers. I have attached the written installation details and a video on your 2017 Subaru Forester that you can use for reference.
