Can a 2014 Ram 2500 with Ram Boxes Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer

dodge megacab is the recommendation not to fit a curt 5th wheel hitch based on being unable to open the boxes or are there other issues?

The problem with Ram trucks that have the Ram Box feature like your 2014 Ram 2500 is the bed width. Ram Box models have a more narrow bed so when you make a turn when towing the pin box on the trailer will likely make contact with the bed sides. But not to worry because there is a way you can tow a 5th wheel trailer with a truck that has Ram Boxes.

You will need to have a Sidewinder pin box installed on the trailer and use a fixed hitch, not a slider. The Sidewinder will move the pivot point of the trailer back 22 inches and it prevents the pin box from rotating at the hitch. Instead it will pivot at the Sidewinder turret meaning the main arm of the Sidewinder pin box stays straight.

The first thing to check is the manufacturer and model of the pin box on the trailer. This information should be on a sticker or plate on the pin box. If it is not then see the link I have included that explains how to measure the pin box to determine which one it is.

If you do have a pin box that can be replaced with a Sidewinder then you will need a fixed hitch and an installation kit. For a hitch you can use the Reese 16K hitch # RP30047. But you for this application you won't be able to use the lowest height setting and you would have to couple and uncouple the trailer perfectly straight.

For an installation kit I recommend Reese custom kit # RP50054-58. It does not require drilling into the truck frame so installation is easier and quicker compared to non-custom kits.
