Question:
We have a 2001 Excursion with factory rail and cross bars. We are looking for a roof rack that we have the ability to haul bike and canoe from time to time.

For a roof rack that fits your factory rails and replaces your crossbars, I recommend checking out the Rhino Rack Aero, which consists of the Quick Mount Legs # RRRLT600 and Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA137S-2. You would have to remove your current crossbars, but once you do, the Vortex Aero should be a big improvement, allowing you to carry bikes and a kayak. The aero design of the bars reduce wind noise and has channels to allow a larger variety of accessories to be used.
There are a number of bike rack options that will work with this rack, and for a wheel mount, I recommend the Malone Pilot # MPG2103. This rack carries one bike that is up to 50 lbs and uses a locking ratchet arm to hold the bikes by the wheels. A frame-mounted rack I suggest checking out is the Swagman RaceReady # S64705, which holds one bike with a capacity of 45 lbs and secures your bike by the downtube with an adjustable arm as well as sliding cinch straps on the wheels.
A kayak carrier I recommend checking out is the Swagman Exo Aero # S65145. This is a saddle-style carrier that simply clamps on and uses hand knobs to tighten brackets around the bars. It includes a pair of tie-down straps and a pair of bow-stern anchor ropes as well.
I have included links to video reviews of each of these products for you to take a look at.
