Recommended Weight Distribution For Jeep With 7x12 Dual Axle Enclosed Trailer

Question:

So Ive got a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Model 4x4 Diesel. I recently purchased an enclosed trailer 7x12, dual axle, weights about 1800#s to tow my motorcycle and various other things. I know my Jeep can use a WDH and I know I dont intend to tow at the max capacity for the Jeep but Im having a hard time figuring out what type of WDH to purchase. The Jeep has sway control so I dont know if I need it as part of the WDH. Any assistance you guys could provide to make my search easier Id greatly appreciate. I was predominately looking at the PS49581 because the TW for it more closely matches what I expect to tow but I dont want to purchase the wrong thing. Thanks!

For a weight distribution system, you want to base your decision off of total tongue weight and features like anti-sway. The total tongue weight is not just the loaded tongue weight of the trailer, but also includes any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. So any supplies you load in the back of your Jeep will also add to that number.

The sway control that is integrated in your Jeep really doesn't help the sway of the trailer directly. It basically adds braking to the wheels of your Jeep to try and keep it aligned when the trailer makes it sense a sway. I'm not a fan of this system and recommend you get a weight distribution system with anti-sway so it can be prevented before your vehicle feels the effects.

For the best system for sway control and what I would want to tow my Harley is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # RP66072. This is the only system that uses a preventative sway control. The dual cams and hot rolled spring bars help your trailer stay centered for straight driving. The cams are overcome on turns and then realign for straight roads automatically.

For the best economical option, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA94-00-0600.

For either system, I recommend the 2" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-5/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 10,000 # A-90. This is very likely the coupler size for your trailer.
