Troubleshooting Movement Between Trailer Coupler and Hitch Ball On Weight Distribution System
Question:
I have 2016 Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer with a 14,000# equalizer hitch. The trailer has the Atwood coupler and equalizer has the 2 5/16inch ball. When I stop and then pull away, say from a stop sign I hear looseness and clunking noise between coupler and the ball more than I think there should be. I took a new ball and slide it in and secured it. Seemed to fit right. Is there anything in there that would allow wedge to move when apply brakes and stop? I would order a new coupler from you if that would or might likely help. The existing one is not very old and I do keep the ball greased. Please advise!

There will be some play with any ball and coupler because the trailer has to rotate. However, it sounds like you have too much movement because putting another hitch ball in place seemed to fit better. I recommend changing the hitch ball in your weight distribution system if it is no longer the correct size.
If the coupler you have is an underslung coupler that may have something to do with the noise as well. We do have weight distribution systems that are specifically designed for underslung couplers because the angle is different. You may need to adjust the head tilt on your weight distribution system for better connection.
