Will Draw-Tite # 24755 Be Strong Enough To Support a Bike Rack and 2 Bikes on a 2006 Acura TL

I have a 2006 Acura TL 3.2L. I am concerned about the strength and stability of the Draw-Tite # 24755 because it attaches directly to the trunk pan rather than any stronger supporting frame/body member. Will the hitch be able to safely handle a small bike rack and two adult bikes without damaging the trunk pan? Are auxiliary stabilizing straps necessary?

Expert Reply:

Yes, as long as you do not exceed the towing and tongue weight capacity of the Draw-Tite # 24755 you will be fine. Draw-Tite tests their hitches on vehicles to ensure that they fit and are safe to use. The tongue weight capacity of the hitch is 200 lbs, which is the limit for the combined weight of the bike rack and the bikes.

You will want to make sure that your bike rack is compatible with class I hitches. Also, you will be limited to carrying only 2 bikes.

It would not hurt to use a stabilizing strap like the CURT Bike Rack Strap, part # 18050, but is not required by Draw-Tite. The stabilizing strap will help reduce jarring and torque applied to the hitch from the weight of the bikes and bike rack.

I have linked instructions for the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24755 and FAQ Articles on trailer hitches and hitch mounted bike racks.
