Recommended Hitch Bike Rack for 60-Lb Electric Bike

Question:

I am looking at the Swagman XC 2 hitch mount 2 bike rack. My wifes bike is a EZ Pedaler, T350. Weighs about 60 lbs. We would only be putting the one bike on the rack, traveling from Illinois to Texas. FYI Discount Ramp told me I should get their motorcycle rack.??? thanks for any advice.

It is not always permissible to mount one heavy bike of 60-lbs on a rack that can hold two bikes of 35-lbs each, such as the Swagman XC platform rack # S64650. Although this may seem counter-intuitive there is a good reason. With the total bike weight concentrated on fewer components there is risk of overloading them, items like the wheel hoops.

The EZ Pedaler T350 electric bike weighs 61-lbs with its battery in place. As e-bikes go this is fairly lightweight as many can be in excess of 80-lbs with their batteries.

We do have electric-bike-ready carriers suitable for the T350, such as the Saris Freedom 2-Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B which also fits both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches like the Swagman XC. Since the T350 has no top frame tube you will also need an adapter bar # UB01 to mount it properly on the carrier. Please refer to the linked videos for more on this rack, which is the most cost-effective option. Since the Saris is rated for 60-lbs per bike you will want to remove the bike battery before transport.
