Troubleshooting 2014 Ford F-150 7-Way with No 12V Trailer Power

No 12 v to trailer. 2014 f150 platinum towing package trailer plug

If your F-150's 7-way socket no longer delivers +12V power there are a couple of potential causes. One is the relay, of course, which can be checked and replaced if necessary. In the 2014 F-150 the relay number 9 activates the trailer tow battery charge circuit.

Another possibility is simply that there could be corrosion on the contacts or trapped foreign material inside the socket. Any electrical item exposed to the elements, such as 7-way wiring that can be hit with water and road salt, can develop corrosion. Sometimes this occurs INSIDE the socket on the vehicle (or inside the plug on the trailer).

Sometimes you can clean out the corrosion but often it is a better long-term solution to replace the 7-way socket with an item like # 74682 or # HM40975.

A clean or new 7-way can be protected from corrosion with an application of dielectric grease at the time of installation. Item # 11755 prevents entry of water and other contaminants that can lead to corrosion and will prolong the life of the 7-way contacts.
