Does Trailer Axle Determine Overall Capacity and Recommended 7,000 Pound Hub and Drum  

Question:

I plan to build a 30ft sail boat trailer to haul my boat to Mexico. I have a steel fabrication shop so I will have no problem building the Trailer. My boat will weigh 10,000# including the Trailer. If I install 2 galvanized 7000# axles that should give my Trailer 14000# capacity, correct? Could you send me a quote for 2 units with Hydraulic brakes and Hubs? Thank you,

A trailer axle will typically be the best indicator of its overall capacity, but there are other components that may contribute to this as well. A trailer is always going to be limited by its weakest component. So, a trailer with two 7,000 pound axles will indeed have a capacity of 14,000 pounds, assuming that all other components on the trailer also match or exceed this rating. For example, if the trailer has two 7,000 pound axles but the hubs, wheels, or frame itself have a smaller rating, then the particular component that is weaker will determine the trailer's overall capacity.

For a 7,000 pound trailer hub and drum assembly, I recommend the etrailer.com Assembly # AKHD-865-7-2-EZ-K. This hub and drum is designed for 7,000 pound axles and features an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The # 25580 inner bearing, # 14125A outer bearing, races, and # GS-2250DL seal are included.

For compatible hydraulic drum brakes, you can use # AKFBBRK-7R for the Right Hand and # AKFBBRK-7L for the Left Hand.
