Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2017 Mazda CX-5
Question:
Hello, Im looking at buying a Mazda CX-5 and would prefer a 2inch hitch, where the Mazda OEM hitch is smaller. The Curt hitch appears to install in the same locations as the factory hitch, including the pre-threaded holes in the frame. Which seems preferable to the Draw-Tite. But I see the Curt requires load straps for bike carriers, where the Draw-Tite does not. Id rather not need the straps. Is Curt just being paranoid? Or is the Draw-Tite a superior hitch? Thanks!

A support strap, like part # 18050, is required by warranty on many Curt trailer hitch receivers for non-towing applications. However, the Curt Class III hitch for a 2017 Mazda CX-5, part # C13315, does not have this requirement. I verified with Curt just to be sure. However, using a support strap is never a bad idea for the stability.
With that being said, the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 76138 that fits the CX-5, also does not require any drilling. It installs into existing holes in the frame, although not the same holes as the Curt. Even though the two use different holes the fishwire technique is still used on both of them so the install isn't much different. Between the two I recommend the Draw-Tite because of the slightly higher capacity and slightly lower price tag.
I've attached the install videos of each hitch for you. As well as a demonstration video on the support strap.
