Trailer Hitch Extension for Use Behind a Truck Bed Camper
Question:
I just purchased a camper to go in the bed of my truck. For trips to the sand dunes I am planning to tow my 20foot box trailer behind the camper, so I will need a hitch extension at least 40. I have a 2 1/2 inch factory mount hitch receiver on my 1 ton pickup. I know you sell a 42foot extender bar, but would that be safe for towing my trailer? Or should I look for one of the other styles that helps distribute the weight with chains, etc? Just want to be safe and avoid spending any more than I need?

I have two options that will allow for you to extend the connection point between your truck and trailer. The best option for you will depending on the gross trailer weight (GTW) and tongue weight (TW) of your trailer. As long as the GTW and TW of your trailer does not exceed 5,000 lbs and 500 lbs respectively, the Titan Hitch Box Extension part # RP45018 will work well for you as long as you trim the bar down to 41". If the GTW and TW of your trailer exceeds the above 5,000lb/500lb rating then you will indeed want to use a weight distribution system.
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will want to find the total tongue weight (TTW) of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight of both your loaded ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If the TTW of your trailer is between 500 lbs and 800 lbs then the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP66541 will work well for you. You will also need a hitch ball such as part # A-90 for 2" or part # 19286 for 2-5/16".
The above hitch extender and weight distribution system will allow for a trailer with a GTW and TW up to 7,500 lbs and 750 lbs respectively. If the GTW and TW ratings of your trailer exceed the above capacity then the only other option I have for you is the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension part # TLE1542. However, in order to use the TorkLift SuperTruss you will need a TorkLift hitch. In order to see if we have a TorkLift hitch available for you I would need to know the year, make, and model of your vehicle. In addition to the hitch you will also need to use two of the Curt Reducer Sleeve part # C45405.
I have attached a few review videos for you to check out as well.
