Comparing the Performance of the Curt and Draw-Tite Class I Hitches on a 2017 Chevrolet Trax

for bike or cargo carrier use on a 17 trax is the drawtite 36554 stronger than the curt c11358. I saw the curt recommends a stabilizer strap and that seems like a nuisance.

The Draw-Tite Class I, part # 36554 and the Curt Class I, part # C11527 really aren't stronger or weaker than each other, as the actual capacity will be determined by your vehicle. You can verify your vehicle's capacities in your owner's manual or with your manufacturer.

That being said, if you have a greater than 250 pound capacity on your vehicle, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite hitch, as exceeding the hitch's rated capacity is going to risk damage to your vehicle's frame.

The stabilizer strap, part # 18050, is a bit of a nuisance, but has a large effect on the actual performance of your accessories. It's a little hard to explain, so I've included a video that shows a cargo carrier and bike rack with and without the strap installed, and how different their performance is.
