I wouldn't consider it a screw-up at all! We can get you a high-quality new sliding hitch for your 2017 Ford F-250 with a short bed. The only thing you didn't say was if it had the factory rail kit or not so I'll go over options for both.

If your truck does not have the factory rail kit (the puck system) then I recommend the Curt Q20 # C16536, which has a 20,000 lb capacity, a forged self-latching jaw for optimal contact with your king pin, and a pivoting head to make hooking up easier. You can use the Reese Custom Installation Kit # RP50074-58 for base rails, which will not require drilling into your new F-250's frame to install.

If you did not want to have to get out of your truck to adjust the slider than the Demco Hijacker # DM8550034 is an auto-sliding hitch with a wraparound single-piece jaw that has a 3/4" steel locking jaw for added security. It has an 18,000 lb capacity and hitch height settings of 15-1/4", 16-1/2", and 18".

Should your new F-250 have the puck system, the Demco Hijacker # DM8550024 offers the same features as the Hijacker I mentioned above but simply drops into the F-250's puck system. I have added links to video reviews of these parts for you to take a look at as well.
