Are Bike Adapter Bars Needed for Womens and Kids Bikes on the Yakima FullBack Bike Rack

Hello, I am looking for a 3 bike trunk mount to fit out 2017 Subaru Outback that does not require me to purchase a separate adapter piece for women or childrens bikes. I read in other reviews that this might be a good option. Can you confirm if this fits the bill, or recommend another trunk mount that would?

With any 2-arm bike rack, including the FullBack # Y02633, there is always the possibility that you would need to use a bike adapter bar, such as # 64005. There are just so many different kinds of bikes out there that it is very difficult to say for sure either way.

Bike racks with the arms spaced close together are less likely to need an adapter bar though. On the FullBack the arms are 12 inches apart, outside to outside. If there is enough free space on the underside of the top frame bars of the bikes you want to carry for that 12 inch spread then you would not need adapter bars.

For an even more narrow arm spread take a look at the Thule OutWay # TH56BV. On it the arm spread is 6-1/2 inches to 10-1/2 inches (they can move to make the arms closer or further apart). You are even less likely to need adapter bars with this rack though it is more expensive.

For a similar rack with arms that can move in and out but at a lower price take a look at the Saris Bones # SA801BL. It has a similar spread range as the OutWay. If you used this rack you will also need # SA3035 to properly secure the side straps to your 2017 Subaru Outback.
