Will Curt Bike Rack Work on Jeep Wrangler With Spare Tire?

Question:

Will the curt fit on a jeep wrangler with the spare tire still on the back?

Curt Bike Rack # C18087 only has about 5" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier and when your bikes are loaded they will be roughly the same length so it is unlikely you will be able to use this rack. What you can do is take something like a yardstick or something with a straight edge and hold it against your spare tire, then measure from the center of your hitch pin hole to the straight edge. This will give you the distance you need your bike rack to be for it to clear your spare tire.

For a platform rack the SportRack SR2902LR is 12" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack and could be an option for you though a hanging rack like the Hollywood Racks Road Runner # HR420. This rack has an extended, 20" shank and is 15" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar. It uses anti-sway cradles to prevent your bikes from contacting one another, comes with a hitch lock and 8' cable lock to protect your investments.

Please note that when using a hanging rack like the Road Runner, it's possible you'll need bike frame adapter bar # 64005 if your bike is dual-suspension, has a step-through frame or you want to carry a small children's bike. The bar will give those bikes a horizontal mounting point so they can be carried by the rack. I've added a link to a video review of the adapter so you can see exactly how it works as well as links to reviews of the bike racks I mentioned.

Question:

Thank you for your kind reply and information, however I am confused by the dimensions and the corresponding photos of the two bike racks. The photos of the sport rack appear to show a much shorter hitch length than the curt rack. Could you check your measurements?

It is possible that the Curt # C18087 looks like it has a longer shank depending on the photos you are looking at but I did check and they are correct for the Curt rack and the SportRack SR2902LR. If you do take a measurement and find out how much distance there is from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the spare tire on your Jeep I'd be happy to make a specific recommendation for you.
