Alternate Mounting Hardware for Yakima SpaceBooster Cargo Box on 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have a Yakima SpaceBooster that I am trying to fit on our 2015 Subaru Outback. The fixed distance of the factory racks are just a few inches too wide for an easy fit and I am wondering what my options are? I am considering adding a couple of additional holes in the bottom of the box, but am curious to know if there are other strategies that you recommend, eg. different hardware, etc.? If I do need to drill holes, is there a recommended procedure - metal drill bit or heated point, etc.?

It is not a huge deal to add a few new mounting holes to the bottom of an ABS plastic cargo box like the Yakima SpaceBooster. A cordless drill and appropriately-sized drill bit will make short work of it. I would avoid using a heated implement for making the holes since it could be a bit messy and could make it harder to control the size of the hole.

The things to keep in mind are that you want to drill no more additional holes than absolutely necessary so measure, check and re-check. Try to use as many of the original holes as you can. Make the holes no larger than they need to be for using either the original hardware or an alternative hardware kit. Last seal up the old/extra holes with black silicone sealant # LT37467.

If the box's original hardware will fit around the factory crossbars then you might as well re-use it. If you need a new mounting kit I suggest a cost-effective option like # CTC-18PARTS since the original parts for the box are no longer available due to its age.

A handy item to consider for use with your box is the Telesteps folding step # TE97FR. This lightweight folding step comes fully assembled but gives you a foot of extra reach for loading and unloading your rooftop cargo. I own one of these and use it for vehicle cargo as well as for general around-the-house applications.
