Where are etrailer Electric Brake Assemblies Made and How do they Compare to Dexter Brakes

Question:

Hi, I see that the Dexter assembly is made in the USA. When compared with the AKEBRK-35-SA the origin of the AKEBRK is not mentioned or provided. Is the AKEBRK assembly also made in the USA?

Expert Reply:

Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA is made overseas but has a very important advantage over the Dexter option. Basically the difference is in the shoes. The pad material on AKEBRK-35-SA is actually cut to length whereas on other assemblies the material is snapped off. Snapping it off leads to more chipped edges and cracks in the pad material.

Also in many, not all, brake assemblies the pad material is riveted to the shoes so if the material wears down far enough the rivets will start scratching the drum. The pad material on AKEBRK-35-SA are fully bonded to the shoes, not riveted, so they have several advantages over the riveted type including less wear on the drum and less chance of pad material coming off and causing problems.
