Can You Upgrade From 18x8.50-8 Tires to 145/R12 Tires on 1976 Jayco Tent Trailer?

Question:

I have a 1976 Jayco tent trailer. Ive been running 18.5x8.5-8 tires and rims. I wanted to go with a 145/R12 tire and rim. Im trying to get more height and less width. Thank you.

You may be able to go from a 18x8.50-8 tire to a 145/R12 tire so long as the wheel has the same bolt pattern and you have enough clearance from the fender to the top of the tire; we generally recommend at least 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the fender.

We have 145/R12 tire and wheel combinations that may work for you. The Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM35351DX has a wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM31199DX has a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. I have added a link to a help article that will explain how to determine wheel bolt pattern if you are unsure of how to do so.

I've added links to video reviews of each tire for you to check out as well.

Should I go with a 10 inch tire?

We generally recommend at least 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the fender. Tire and wheel combinations that have a 145/R12 tire, like the two I mentioned, are going to have a width of 5.7" and a total outer diameter of 21.3".
