Cleaning the Weld Nut Threads on a 2009 Chevy Traverse to Install a Trailer Hitch

I just purchased this hitch but will need to use a thread tap to clean out the threads since it’s a 2009. What size should I get?

Tapping the threads should be a last resort because if done improperly the threads in the weld nut on the vehicle can get damaged or altered causing the bolt not to fit. What we recommend first is cleaning out the weld nuts using a spray penetrate like WD40 or PB Blaster, letting it soak for 15 minutes, and then going at it with a wire brush, battery terminal cleaner, or nylon brush such as # 814092. This process may need to be repeated a few times.

In the event that a thread tap must be used the weld nuts on the frame rails take a M12 x 1.75 x 45mm bolt size and the passenger's side center bolt at the receiver takes a 1/2” – 13 x 1-3/4” (there may actually not be a weld nut for this one though). I have included some links that should also help.
