Recommended Adapter for Jeep With Spare Tire and Swinging Bike Carrier

Question:

I have a 2016 Jeep Rubicon. I wanted a swing out bike rack so that I could have a trailer hitch mounted bike rack and still gain access to my gate even with bikes fully loaded. I bought the Yakima Fullswing. I already needed a 6 inch trailer hitch extension to clear the bike rack of the rear tire but I didnt know I was going to have a problem with vertical clearance of the tire when opening the gate. Now I think I need to switch to a hitch extension but not sure what meets the criteria for my uses. I want to make sure I am doing this safely. The bike rack is 56lbs. The max capacity is 150lbs. Here is a picture of the bike rack, fully extended, mounted to the 6 inch hitch extension. You can see my tire sits too low to let the gate clear the bike rack arm.

For your Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465, the distance from center of hitch pin hole to foot of carrier is 9 inches. I appreciate the photo to show the issue and have a solution for you. I recommend the Curt Dual 2" Receiver Tube Adapter, 8" Extension # D-192. This dual hitch receiver adapter will allow you to mount your bike carrier under the current receiver to give you a 5.5 inch drop from your current receiver. This will give you adequate ground clearance and also allow you to use your swing away rack without further interference from your rack or spare tire. Because you are using an adapter it will decrease your hitch tongue weight capacity by 50% but you will still be within the range of your bike rack even with that limitation.

I recommend using a locking pin like # e98880 and an anti-rattle like # RM-061 for stability and security.
