Kayak Carriers for Use on 2016 Lincoln MKX
Question:
We are in the process of purchasing a 2016 Lincoln MKX and would like to haul our 2 eddyline sandpiper kayaks on the roof of the car with the most convenient and easiest way for two people in their mid 70s to load and unload the kayaks. What canyou offer

Expert Reply:
A 12-foot Eddyline Sandpiper kayak weighs a moderate 38-lbs in bone stock condition so the Lincoln's roof ought to be fine for the combined weight of two of them but it is still a good idea to check the owner's manual. Keep in mind that the vehicle's roof weight rating is for everything on it, which could include an aftermarket roof rack (10 to 15 -lbs) and kayak carriers (5 to 10-lbs) depending on which way you go.
I suggest checking out the linked article on watersports carriers as it will help you consider the best option for the distance you need to travel with the kayaks. It will also help you consider each of the different types of carriers we offer.
If you will be travelling only a short distance on local roads then the low-cost foam block carriers might be a good fit for you. These are very lightweight, inexpensive and with two sets of hands loading the boats not too tough to handle. Best of all, while they can be used with a roof rack one is not absolutely necessary; the blocks can install right on your roof. An example is the Malone # MAL85VR which comes with tie-downs. This is the only option that does not require a roof rack. If you are going to be on the interstate then you need a roof rack and rack-mount carrier.
We also have the popular J-style carriers like the Rhino-Rack # S512 which DOES require a roof rack to be installed on the car. Two of these could be installed on a roof rack, each facing out for easier loading. We also have multi-kayak carriers like the Thule Stacker # TH830 which again needs a roof rack but which can hold up to 4 kayaks.
We also have J-style carriers that offer a load-assist feature. The Malone Downloader # MPG114MD is a rack-mount carrier that can be used along with their Telos load assist # MPG351XL.
Roof racks for the MKX are shown on the linked page. Just select your roof type at the top of the page to then see racks that will fit. If you want to go with a roof rack and rack-mounted kayak carriers please let me know the type of roof on the car and I will be glad to guide your selection based on your preferred carrier.
