Recommended Axle and Wheels for Harbor Freight Folding Trailer Carrying Kayaks

Question:

looking to use my trailer to carry 2-4 kayaks I figure 350-500 lbs max plus trailer. Is there a simple axle swap that I can use to drive safely on the highway at 70-80 mph on a 14 or 15 inch rim? Thanks

Harbor Freight trailers are normally not able to work well with other axles because they are not made to industry specs. We do have a kit that will allow you to replace your trailer axle and suspension that will also fit the tires you are seeking. It is the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2 - 2,000 lbs # A20RS545. This will simply bolt to your trailer frame and use a 2 inch square tube not included to support the assemblies utilizing the integrated holes. There are aeon rubber springs integrated that will replace your suspension so this kit is all you need. This kit is compatible with wheels up to 12 inches.

For that size, I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # TA98RR which is rated for speeds up to 81 mph.

If you really want the larger wheels then you will need to upgrade to the 3,500 lb system # A35RS545. This will install in exactly the same way and work with wheels 13 to 17-1/2 inches diameter. For those wheels, I recommend the Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w 15" White Spoke Wheel # TA46VR. This wheel is rated for speeds up to 81 mph and also comes with a 2 year roadside assistance warranty.
