Recommended Tow Bar and Bolt-On Adapter Tabs for 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser

Question:

I saw thw recomendations on the web for the 1987 land cruiser using the Blue Blue Ox BX88266 adaptor plates. You also said you have installation instructions. I have been towing it with a u-haul tow bar but the bumper is cracking at the mounting holes. I need to see how this installation is different from what I have. Trying to adapt a blue ox towbar to a 1983-1989 tand cruiser. BX7460P

The Blue Ox Heavy-Duty Universal Bolt-On Adapter Tabs - 20,000 lbs # BX88266 is a mount that is rated for up to 20,000 lbs. The bumper will need to be modified to fit the holes in the brackets which are 5-1/2 inches on center and 2 inches on center. I've attached a photo to assist.

There are not custom base plates available for your 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser, so these brackets are the best option. You may need to reinforce or replace your bumper to handle the weight since it appears the weight has caused too much stress on your current bumper.

Your vehicle has a curb weight of 4,246 lbs, so once you add any modifications and fluids, I recommend using a tow bar like the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 6,500 lbs # BX7380. You can alternatively use the # BX7460P for a pintle hitch or # BX4330 for a coupler style tow bar.
