How to Carry a Recumbent Bike and Recumbent Trike with a 2015 Honda Fit

Question:

I want to install a trailer hitch on my 2015 Honda Fit to carry my Hollywood bike/trike rack. We currently use this rack our aging Honda Element. We carry my ICE recumbent trike as well as a recumbent bike. The combined weight of the bike and trike is around 100 lbs. I dont know how much the rack weighs but it is pretty heavy. What is the best hitch in your opinion? I also want the most clearance I can get as my Fit is already pretty low to the ground compared to our Element. I also wondered if I could add a riser to bring up the clearance a bit. Thank you!

I hate to tell you but you will not be able to carry the bikes with your Honda Fit. The issue is that all of the trailer hitches for the Fit are Class I hitches. The types of bike racks that can hold both a trike and a recumbent bike, such as # HR1000Z-R-TRKADP, only fit Class III and up 2 inch trailer hitches.

There are adapters but the use of an adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. The tongue weight capacity of the available trailer hitches is 200 pounds so by using an adapter it would be reduced to 100 pounds. So basically you would be able to carry just the bike rack but no bikes on it. I wish I had better news for you.

Question:

Im disappointed to hear that I cannot put a hitch and bike/trike carrier on my Fit..... Is there some other way I can carry them? Would I possibly be able to install a hitch to accommodate a trailer for them? I dont want to give up on the idea as I had this in mind when I bought this car.

You could put them on a small trailer. Honda probably wouldn't want you to tow anything with the Fit but really we are talking about bikes and a trailer so it isn't much weight at all. We have some trailers, see link below. A design such as # K2MMT4X6 would be best given the types of bikes you want to carry.

If you go this route I recommend hitch # C11406. The recommended ball mount is # C45521. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # A-80. Or if the trailer you choose requires a 2 inch ball use # A-82.

And for trailer wiring you can use # 118767 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle for the trailer lights.
