How wide of frame will this fit on? What is the advantage or disadvantage between this and 40050 for a 1990 F150 XLT 4x4 300CI

For your 1990 Ford F-150 the Draw Tite hitch part # 41004 is a confirmed fit and would work well. There would be no need to measure your frame width.
The Draw Tite part # 40050 is a multi-fit hitch instead which is designed for universal applications. It would technically fit your truck but it wouldn't give you as nice of a fit so the # 41004 would be the better option.
