Question:
I have a 2011 Toyota Highlander with factory crossbars and Im looking for a roof box that is compatible. Ive read on a few different places that most Yakima boxes wont fit the factory crossbars for this year but did see the Skybox 16 would work with a 2013 that has factory crossbars. Is there something specific with the factory crossbars that is preventing this model to fit on the 2011 Highlander? Thanks for your help!

I do not have the dimensions of the factory crossbars on a 2011 Toyota Highlander but according to Yakima the SkyBox 16 Rooftop Cargo Box # Y07335 will not fit, which means the Highlander's factory bars are likely larger than 3-1/2" x 1-11/16", which is the maximum dimensions the SkyBox will fit.
There is a cargo box which is compatible with your Highlander, the Thule Sidekick # TH78GC which uses U-bolts to clamp onto your crossbars; I checked with Thule to confirm a fit. The Sidekick has a capacity of 8 cubic feet with a weight capacity of 75 lbs.
Another option is to use a rooftop cargo basket, and the Yakima MegaWarrior # Y07080 is a fit for your Highlander's factory crossbars. It is 52" long x 48" wide x 6-1/2" tall and has a 130 lb weight capacity (though your capacity is limited to your roof rack's capacity). You will also need a cargo bag and a great option for this basket is the Rhino Rack # RRLB500 which uses 6 tie-down straps to attach to your roof basket, holds up to 17-1/2 cubic feet of gear and is waterproof to keep your cargo dry.
