what do i look for if my hitch ball is bad or needs replacing?

In order to choose the correct replacement hitch ball you would need to measure the diameter of the shank, length of the shank, and diameter of the ball. The diameter of the ball should be stamped into the head but the other two will more than likely need to be physically measured. For example, the part # 63845 has a 2-1/8" long x 1" diameter shank with a 2" ball.
Once you find out the above info you can then use our selection which I have attached for you to find the correct one for your needs.
