Why Does Trailer Wiring 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Need to Run Directly to Vehicle Battery

Why does your FAQs say to run it all the way up to the battery instead of the rear power outlet on the drivers side in the rear of the cargo companrtment? This is from the owners manual: Power Outlets Fuse Locations 1 — F81 Fuse 20A Yellow Rear Power Outlet battery powered at all times The T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56407 that fits your 2018 Jeep Wrangler MUST have a hot lead run to the battery because the port you are referencing is not rated to handle additional amperage. Using this instead of a battery can lead to a fire or fried electrical circuits in your vehicle, so please run the hot lead to your Jeeps battery.

Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. While it seems easier to just run the power wire to an available accessory circuit it's not the best idea to go that route. In the event of a short you can potentially damage the vehicle wiring and drawing straight from the battery prevents that all together.

For your 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler you need to install a harness that draws power from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. For that you would need the part # 118786. I also attached a help article on running the power wire for you to check out as well.
