I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2007 Toyota Matrix and found that it can tow a trailer that weighs up to 1,500 pounds. I do recommend verifying this in your copy of the manual just in case you have a different model.
In order to tow a trailer you will need to start with a trailer hitch. I recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch # 24812. This custom hitch will use existing holes in your vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation and all the necessary hardware is included.
I have attached an installation video and the written instructions that you can use for reference.
Then for a trailer wiring harness I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118386. This will install by plugging into factory ports behind the trim panels in the cargo area on the driver and passenger side. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
I have again attached the written installation instructions that you can check out.
You will then just need a ball mount like the Draw-Tite Drawbar # 3593 and a hitch ball that is compatible with the coupler on your trailer, such as the 1-7/8 inch # 19256. This particular ball mount features a 2-1/8 inch rise or a 2-3/4 inch drop. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best ball mount for your setup if the rise or drop on this unit is not sufficient to tow your trailer level.
I have also included a couple articles on trailer towing that you might find helpful.
