Roof Weight Capacity of a 2012 Subaru Impreza
Question:
It looks like the Subaru Impreza with the built in rails can only carry 150 lbs. I’d like to carry more that for long camping trips. Is there a way to fortify or upgrade those rails at all to carry more? I see that the Yakima set up can carry 250 lbs which sounds about right for what I would like to carry. Do you have any advice?

According to the owner's manual for your 2012 Subaru Impreza, the roof rack weight capacity is 150 lbs. Unfortunately, you cannot exceed this weight capacity as it takes into consideration both the vehicle and rack. Therefore, even with an aftermarket roof rack installed you will still be limited to 150 lbs. This is also a rather high rating as most vehicles have a 100 lb weight capacity and most aftermarket roof racks only go to 165 lbs.
If you need to carry more cargo and do not have any more room inside the vehicle you will want to consider using a trailer hitch and hitch mounted cargo carrier. I recommend using the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # DT24959 if you have a hatchback or part # 24960 if you have a sedan. Then for a cargo carrier I recommend the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18145.
I have attached a review video of the cargo carrier for you as well.
