Troubleshooting Camper Wiring Connections from 7-Way Vehicle Trailer Connection to 6-Way Square

I have a 2000 Viking Pop Up Camper and I am having tow light wiring issues. The turn signals are reversed and when I have my idle lights on, only my left brake light is on. I have a 2012 Nissan Xterra that I use to pull the camper. My Nissan has a 7 way circle adapter. My camper is a 6 way square adapter. Right now I am going from a 7 way circle to a 4 way flat to a 6 way square. Do you think that this could be why I am getting faulty lights? Should I go straight from a 7 way circle to a 6 way square? Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There could be a couple different things going on with your trailer lights, so first, I recommend checking your vehicle 7-way using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. I've attached a photo of the 7-way to help you determine the pin locations and functions.

I recommend cleaning all of your connections with some sand paper and then using dielectric grease # 11755 in all of your connectors to keep moisture and debris out. It sounds like you are using a 7-way to 4-way like # PK12716 and then a 4-way to 6-way like # 30104. That is a lot of connectors but it should still function.

It sounds like your trailer has the left and right side reversed and that you have a bad ground connection or a bad bulb on the one side for your running light. My recommendation is to change your trailer connection so you can get a clean connection between your vehicle and trailer. I recommend using the etrailer 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # e99011. This will help you transition your trailer wiring from the 6-way square and give you a nice 7-way direct connection. Make sure as you work on your wiring to make sure all your ground connections (which are sometimes through the mounting hardware on your trailer tail lights) are a clean bare metal to metal connection.

I've attached an article and some videos to assist.
