Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Subaru Forester to Tow Boat Trailer

Have a 2018 Forester and wanting to tow a boat trailer. What do I need?

In order to pull a boat trailer with your 2018 Subaru Forester you will first need a trailer hitch. For this I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75876. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your Forester and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and it has a towing weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. I also recommend verifying the capacity of your vehicle by checking your owner's manual. You will just need to follow whichever capacity is lower, the vehicle's or the hitch's.

I have attached an installation video on the 2018 Subaru Forester that you can use for reference.

You will then need a trailer wiring harness to power the trailer's signal lights. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467. This custom harness will simply plug into factory ports behind the driver side trim panel. This will give you a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights. I have again attached an installation video that you can check out.

If your boat trailer is equipped with a 5-Way connector for powering a reverse lockout on the actuator then you can just add the Tow Ready Adapter # 20036. This will plug right into the 4-Way on the Subaru to provide a 5-Way on the other end to connect with the trailer. The additional blue wire will just need to be spliced into the reverse circuit wire on the vehicle.

Lastly you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
