All Trailer Lights Stopped Working After Installing Tail Light # 30-92-001

Question:

I am trying to replace taillight on 2004, 3 wire system. License plate holder broken or never there. I retired new light assembly white to white, green to green and black to black. Now none on the trailer lights are working. What did I do wrong? Checked all fuses and they are good.

It is entirely possible that the wire colors on your trailer have different functions that the corresponding wire colors on taillight # 30-92-001. On the light the white wire is the ground, green is for running lights, and black is for brake light/turn signal.

You can verify the functions of the wires you have on the trailer using a circuit tester such as # PTW2992 or a meter if you have one. Connect the trailer to a tow vehicle and have someone operate the light functions while you test the wires to verify the functions.

If nothing happens, try coupling the trailer to the ball. If everything starts working continue the test and install the light. When finished you will want to investigate the main trailer connector ground because a trailer should not have to be connected to the ball in order to ground the trailer. Make sure the trailer connector is clean and free of corrosion and that all grounds that you can find are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

Depending on the trailer there may be fuses or breakers somewhere to check as well as any on the tow vehicle so take a look at the trailer's literature to see if that is the case.
