Using Surge Brake Actuator on Trailer with Fold-Away Coupler Hinge

Question:

You guys have put together a needed parts list to put disc brakes on my boat trailer. Thanks! My concern is putting the actuator K2HR35D on the swing away tow hitch. Are there any special instructions or parts needed?

If your trailer is equipped with a fold-away coupler hinge like # FHDPB330301 then you can still use a surge brake actuator like the excellent Zinc-Plated # 099-175-20. The only thing you will want to add is a flexible brake line across the hinge like the Titan # T0776500 to accommodate this function.

Please note that the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D referenced in your question includes rotor-and-hub assemblies, calipers, mounting brackets, and mounting bolts but it does not include a disc brake actuator. This will need to be added separately.

I have attached a great article that details adding disc brakes to a trailer that you might also find helpful.

Question:

Can I use actuator DM8605101 on the existing coupler hinge?

Expert Reply:

Yes, the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8605101 will also work just fine with the coupler hinge on your trailer. As long as you use a flexible brake line as mentioned above you are good to go!
