Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Subaru Forester
Question:
I see class 2 and 3 hitches for my 2018 forester. it can only tow 1500 lbs. Why get a class 3? I read getting the higher rated hitch doesn't make the car tow more

You are correct that a higher rated hitch does not increase a vehicle's towing capacity; however, even though both hitch Classes for your 2018 Subaru Forester are rated higher than the vehicle itself there's still some advantages for getting a Class III.
Class III trailer hitch receivers have a 2 inch opening versus the 1-1/4 inch opening of the Class II hitches, and there are more hitch accessosories, like bike racks and cargo carriers, that fit the 2 inch opening. Also, if you have or get an accessory that fits a 1-1/4 inch hitch you can add an adapter without much drawback. On the other hand if you have a 1-1/4 inch hitch and adapt it to carry a 2 inch accessory you need an extension, and extensions decrease the capacity of the trailer hitch.
So I almost always recommend a Class III hitch whenever possible. Specifically for your Forester I recommend the Draw-Tite # 76182. Since all of the Class III hitches that fit are rated the same this hitch is my to choice strictly for appearance reasons. If you look at the picture I attached you can see how the receiver opening is the only visible part of the hitch. The main cross tube is hidden behind the Subaru's bumper out of site. Other hitches that fit have the cross tube completely visible underneath the bumper which just doesn't look as nice and clean to me.
